THE ONE WITH THE MCA!
The Moot Court Association (MCA) of Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad (SLS-H), is a dedicated cell constituted to incubate and enhance advocacy skills amongst the learners.
It regularly organizes orientation and training programs to hone the drafting and argumentative skills of nascent legal minds. It also hosts, through its faculty cum students’ body, various internal moot court competitions and thereby enables students to participate in external moot court competitions organized nationally and internationally. To plant an interest in mooting since their early years of law school, the MCA organizes the Zeal Moot Court Competition annually for freshers’ batch as a part of their respective curriculums. It also organizes the Zenith Moot Court Competition annually, where teams from across all batches compete to win a place at the podium and the association through these ranks facilitates the bidding process for external (national) moot court competitions. Further, it also holds the Challenger Series which act as internal qualifiers for teams that aim to participate in international moot court competitions. Moreover, to help students participate in the recently evolving Mock Trial Competitions, the MCA organizes Knock-out Rounds which are internal qualifiers for teams that are keen on taking part in the external Mock Trial Competitions.
While sitting for long hours in the library with teammates and going out to the canteen on breaks has always been one of the most fun parts of mooting, it won’t be any wrong to say that pandemic has robbed all this fun off the teams these days. But it’s interesting to note here, that though there’s no longer physical work with the team in libraries and canteens, students are now keenly looking to try out their luck with mooting while working from the comfort of their homes (bonus: they don’t have to spend long hours traveling too!). And the MCA, keeping this in mind has been working relentlessly to see that the teams find no trouble while participating in these online moots whilst working remotely. Through its well-ordered bidding and review process, the MCA ensures that every team representing the institute in an external moot court competition is well prepared with both their memorials as well as their pleadings to give the best of their abilities. The association also pays keen attention to ensuring the preparation of teams that qualify to represent the institute in international moot court competitions. To aid this process, such teams are often guided by external mentors such as legal professionals, academicians, etc, to add that extra-essence required for an international moot.
With all this in the background, students from SLSH during the academic year 2020-21, have risen to greater heights in the subject of mooting, gathering several accolades at reputed moot court competitions despite the obstacles posed by the deadly pandemic. The achievements of SLSH students in multiple prestigious international and national moot court competitions are due to their hard work, talent, and relentless dedication, and, the MCA is proud to have played a part in helping in their achievements, and to have aided them in their victories which were undaunted by the trying times.
